World Cup 2026: Opening Day Preview
Four years after
Gonzalo Montiel scored the decisive penalty to help Argentina defeat France amid the controversies of Qatar 2022, the most-watched sporting tournament in the world returns today (11 June).
Let's forget
about all the off-pitch stories which I won't be touching on (this is purely football only!), the World Cup promises to be five weeks of immense global
competition, talking points and global stars being born – the largest and
longest tournament to date.
Hosted in a
record three countries, Canada, USA and Mexico, the 2026 showpiece features representatives
from all six FIFA confederations for the first time since 2010, and four
nations have qualified for the first time ever – Uzbekistan, Jordan, Curaçao
and Cape Verde.
The group
stage will last from 11 June – 28 June, and the knockouts from 29 June – 19 July.
I will be
writing a piece on the World Cup every single day, reviewing the previous day’s
matches and looking ahead to the upcoming fixtures!
Today’s matches:
Group A
Mexico v
South Africa
8pm (UK
Time)
Mexico
City
The reverse
fixture of the opening match of the 2010 tournament. It’s been 16 years since Siphiwe
Tshabalala fired the ball into the top corner in Johannesburg to kick-start the
first ever African World Cup. Where has the time gone?
Hosts Mexico
will surely be favourites to get off to the best possible start in their nation’s
capital this evening. They haven’t lost any of the seven matches they’ve played
in 2026, and beat Serbia 5-1 last week to complete a perfect warm-up for the
tournament.
It will be
the fifth World Cup for iconic goalkeeper Guillermo Ochoa, now 40, but he will likely be second choice
this tournament to Raul Rangel of Chivas.
Keep an eye
also on Edson Alvarez, familiar to fans of West Ham, and a strike force of Raul
Jimenez, who has just rejoined Wolves after a spell at Fulham, and AC Milan’s
Santiago Jimenez.
South
Africa, meanwhile, returning to the World Cup for the first time since hosting,
lack any household names but do have Burnley’s Lyle Foster in their squad.
Just six of
their squad play their football outside their home nation, and, in a stark contrast
to Mexico’s form, Hugo Broos’ Bafana Bafana are winless in 2026.
Sam’s prediction:
Mexico 2-0 South Africa
South
Korea v Czechia

Guadalajara
OK,
technically not taking place on 11 June, but for the purposes of this, I’m working
in North American time zones, just providing the UK kick off times.
South Korea
are playing in their 11th consecutive World Cup and boast Tottenham
legend Heung-min Son as their talisman, while the likes of Bayern Munich centre-half
Kim Min-jae and Lee Kang-in of PSG will be influential to Hong Myung-bo’s team
this summer.
Qualifying
for their first World Cup since 2006 by defeating both Ireland and Denmark on
penalties in the playoff rounds, Czechia’s danger man is undoubtedly Patrik
Schick; the Bayer Leverkusen striker has netted 22 goals for his club this season
and enjoyed a highly productive Euros in 2021, before adding to his tournament
tally with a further goal in 2024. Tomas Soucek of West Ham will likely be key
as well, while Matej Kovar in goal is a large reason why they are undefeated
since October.
Going to be
a close, maybe cagey, affair.
Sam’s prediction:
South Korea 1-1 Czechia
