Premier League Opening Day: Preview and Predictions

Eighty-nine days after João Palhinha’s goal saved Tottenham from the drop and condemned West Ham to the Championship, Pep Guardiola said farewell to Manchester City, Chelsea were embarrassed by Sunderland and Martin Ødegaard lifted the title, the most-watched sporting league in the world returns for another season.

Arsenal will be looking to defend their crown having won their first title in 22 years, Tottenham are in a period of rebuild, Sunderland and Bournemouth will be playing historic European campaigns and Coventry City, Ipswich Town and Hull City all begin life back in the Premier League having achieved promotion last season.

Manchester City begin a season without Guardiola for the first time in a decade, and are one of a staggering nine teams to have changed their manager over the summer.

There are some particularly intriguing matches in the opening round of fixtures, starting with a clash of champions at the Emirates on Friday night…

Friday 21st August

Arsenal v Coventry City

8pm

The first match of the new season sees the Championship winners travel to the Premier League winners, as Arsenal welcome Coventry City.

It will be the Sky Blues’ first top-flight campaign since 2000-01, and they will undoubtedly be backed by a boisterous away end as they make the trip to the capital.

Coventry have strengthened well, bringing in players with Premier League experience such as Taiwo Awoniyi, Loum Tchaouna and the returning Gustavo Hamer, an eye-catching World Cup breakout star in Caleb Yirenkyi, and they have managed to sign goalkeeper Carl Rushworth on a record permanent deal after a brilliant campaign on loan last year.

Arsenal have completed the summer signings of Christos Tzolis and, most notably, Bruno Guimarães from Newcastle, and they will probably be no match for Frank Lampard’s side on the opening day.

Prediction: Arsenal 3-0 Coventry City

Saturday 22nd August

Hull City v Manchester United

12:30pm

Hull are back in the Premier League for the first time in a decade and face the daunting prospect of an opening-day visit of Michael Carrick’s Manchester United.

The Tigers have brought in a total of eleven players so far in the transfer window, with no signs of slowing down, including notable Premier League mainstays Jack Butland and Matt Targett on free transfers, as well as buying from abroad including players from the Slovenian, Portuguese, Greek, Norwegian, Spanish, American, Swedish and Austrian Leagues.

United have made signings in the area they needed, bringing in Youri Tielemans and Andrey Santos to play in the centre of the pitch… oh and they have Karl Darlow if Senne Lammens gets injured.

Hull won’t make it easy for United, with Oli McBurnie causing the defence some problems, but I’m expecting an opening day win for the Red Devils.

Prediction: Hull City 1-3 Manchester United

Everton v Crystal Palace

3pm

The first new manager to take charge of a Premier League club this season, as Pierre Sage takes his new Crystal Palace team to the Hill-Dickinson Stadium.

Sage has had a mixed transfer window, bringing in defenders Oscar Mingueza and Takehiro Tomiyasu for a combined fee of nothing, Evann Guessand on a permanent deal from Aston Villa and Dwight McNeil from Saturday’s opponents Everton, in a deal which saw Brennan Johnson go the other way. It’s not an exciting window – Palace need more reinforcement.

David Moyes is entering his 12th full season in charge of Everton in two different spells, and has also had a rather unexciting transfer window, with Johnson coming in from Crystal Palace, as well as securing the signatures of Christian Nørgaard and Hayden Hackney.

With Everton fans screaming for Moyes to sign a right-back (this being the first season without Seamus Coleman since 2009), their defensive frailties may well show on the opening day. I don’t know why, but I’m predicting goals.

Prediction: Everton 2-2 Crystal Palace

Ipswich Town v Sunderland

3pm

A battle of a newly-promoted side against last season’s surprise package as Ipswich begin life back in the Premier League under new manager Gary O’Neill.

Both sides have been active in the transfer market – Ipswich have bought a lot from abroad as well as signing players with Premier League experience including Issa Diop, Abdul Fatawu, Florentino Luis and Saša Lukić – while Régis Le Bris’ side have had an uneventful window compared to last year’s numerous signings, only bringing in Thomas Meunier on a free, at the time of writing.

Will Ipswich have as successful a season as Sunderland did last year, the Black Cats qualifying for Europe for just the second time in their history? Probably not, but I’m predicting them to get a point in front of a boisterous Portman Road on Saturday.

Prediction: Ipswich 1-1 Sunderland

Nottingham Forest v Leeds United

3pm

Forest have had six permanent managers since returning to the top-flight in 2022 and start the new season with another new face in the dugout in Oliver Glasner.

The former Palace boss will be tasked with steadying the ship on Trentside after a turbulent 2025/26, which saw four different managers and Forest could have easily been relegated.

It’s been a relatively quiet window for Forest’s standards, having only brought in Xaver Schlager, Gustavo Sa, Ousmane Diomande and Steven Benda. All are smart acquisitions, but Elliot Anderson will be a big loss in midfield.

Daniel Farke’s Leeds, meanwhile, broke their transfer record to sign goalkeeper James Trafford from Manchester City, while also making further smart signings of Facundo Buonanotte, Tarik Muharemovic from Sassuolo and Harry Wilson on a free.

I predict another turbulent season at the City Ground, starting with opening-day defeat courtesy of a sole goal from Harry Wilson on his debut.

Prediction: Nottingham Forest 0-1 Leeds United

Brentford v Tottenham Hotspur

5:30pm

It feels like a new era at Tottenham Hotspur. Roberto De Zerbi has made such an impact since being appointed in March, and the squad has had a summer makeover.

Djed Spence, Radu Dragusin, Yves Bissouma, Alfie Devine, Luka Vuskovic, Manor Solomon, Ashley Phillips and captain Cristian Romero have all left the club, while the club were busy early on in the transfer window but haven’t made any signings since early July.

Every single one of the six additions (Andy Robertson, Jan Paul van Hecke, Marcos Senesi, Martin Dubravka, Mateus Fernandes and Sandro Tonali) have ample Premier League experience, but Spurs need to bring in a winger and a striker before the deadline in two weeks’ time.

Hosts Brentford had an encouraging opening season under Keith Andrews and will be looking to build on narrowly missing out on European football, having made several smart signings, but I believe that Tottenham’s new-look squad will be too much for the Bees on the opening day.

Prediction: Brentford 1-2 Tottenham Hotspur

Sunday 23rd August

Brighton & Hove Albion v Aston Villa

2pm

Fabian Hürzeler’s Brighton are back in Europe this season, having qualified for the Conference League in 2025/26, but face a very tricky opening day test against Europa League winners Aston Villa.

The Seagulls have strengthened their squad, particularly in defence, but van Hecke and Danny Welbeck will be big misses, while long-serving trio Adam Webster, Joel Veltman and Solly March – a one-club man – have all left on free transfers.

Villa’s marquee signing Johan Manzambi comes in after a breakout tournament at the World Cup, but he looks set to miss the opening weekend with a knee injury.

Joao Gomes and Alejandro Garnacho have also come in, the latter on loan from Chelsea, as Unai Emery looks to consolidate Villa in the top four again this season.

Prediction: Brighton 1-2 Aston Villa

Manchester City v AFC

Bournemouth

2pm

There will be a new face in both dugouts at the Etihad on Sunday as Enzo Maresca faces up to Marco Rose.

It will be the first time in eleven seasons that Manchester City will not have the legendary manager Guardiola in the Etihad dugout, but they will be hoping Maresca will be a worthy replacement.

It’s a very tricky opening day test for the former Leicester and Chelsea boss, whose only bank-breaking transfer has been Elliot Anderson from Nottingham Forest for a ridiculous £116m. Bournemouth are looking forward to their maiden voyage in European football but will have to rebuild after manager Andoni Iraola left for Liverpool.

Marco Rose is a good manager, experienced in European football, and has already brought in decent players from the continent. Will it be enough to topple City in their own backyard on the opening day? Probably not.

Prediction: Manchester City 2-0 AFC Bournemouth

Newcastle United v Liverpool

4:30pm

Another match which will see two new managers, after Eddie Howe’s dramatic exit from Newcastle a couple of weeks ago.

Matthias Jaissle is the new man in charge at St James’ Park – the 38-year-old comes to the Premier League having previously managed in Austria and Saudi Arabia. Not a particularly impressive CV on the face of it, but he is a very highly-regarded young coach who has earned a big job in the Premier League.

Newcastle have brought in plenty of young talent over the summer, and face a Liverpool side who have only made two signings so far – but are chasing attacking talents including Bradley Barcola and Ibrahim Mbaye.

Andoni Iraola should be a success on Merseyside. It may take him a while to get going, but this should be an intriguing encounter – which Liverpool will probably edge.

Prediction: Newcastle 0-1 Liverpool

Monday 24th August

Fulham v Chelsea

8pm

A West London derby to kick off the new season? Yes please.

Yet another fixture showcasing two new Premier League bosses as Alvaro Arbeloa takes on compatriot Xabi Alonso.

Arbeloa’s transfer policy seems to have consisted mainly of signing young Spanish talents – with names such as Cesar Palacios and Gonzalo Garcia, with more signings predicted – Craven Cottage could be turning into Costa del Fulham before long… though they did also sign Shea Charles. Harry Wilson will be a big miss for the Cottagers.

Chelsea, meanwhile, have continued their policy of signing anything that moves including, incredibly, Jordan Henderson and Danny Welbeck, like the year is 2012. It’s an interesting tactic – let’s see how much of an impact these players make.

On opening night, it might not be much of an impact – Fulham will be a real stern test.

Prediction: Fulham 1-1 Chelsea
